  • Tigers Fall to Alma College JV in OT Thriller

Grace took the floor for the first time since December 20th last night to face Alma College JV at the Aldrich Athletic Center.

The game was back and forth throughout the first half, and Grace was able to hold on to a two-point lead at the sound of the first half buzzer.  The second half proved to be as close as the first, but Alma found themselves with anywhere from a 2 to 5 point lead for the bulk of the last few minutes of the game.

Down four with fewer than 10 seconds to go it seemed like the Tigers were going to come up short in regulation, until sophomore Ben Kronemeyer hit a three-point shot with a hand in his face with 4 seconds remaining.  The Tigers immediately fouled, but Alma guard Malcolm Thurmond calmly knocked down two free-throws to put the Scots up three.  Grace inbounded the ball to sophomore Rod Altidor, who then took two dribbles and launched a runner from just inside half-court.  Everyone around campus was then woken up by the roar from the crowd, as the ball went through the hoop and gave the Tigers new life headed into Overtime.  You can see the shot in the video below.

Alma’s free throw shooting ultimately sank the Tigers in overtime, finishing with 10 out of their 14 overtime points being from the charity stripe.  The thriller of a game ended with the final score: Alma 97, Grace 93.

"We played with great effort tonight, if was a very physical game and our guys didn't back down at all.  We were really just a stop or two from closing the game out, but never could get that one stop. Credit Alma they played a good game, and made all of their free throws down the stretch,” said Head Coach Dave Oldebekking after the game.

In his first game on the JV squad, Altidor scored 24 points, with 20 of them coming in the second half and overtime period.  Kronemeyer had a great overall game, with 20 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists.  Freshman guard Devin Collier added 12 points, and a team-high 4 assists.

The Tigers will look to bounce-back against the Davenport University JV squad, as they will host them next Monday at the Aldrich Athletic Center.
