The Tigers met Moody Bible Institute Friday night in the second round of the Midwest Region Tip Off Tournament, and came away with a decisive 76-60 victory. Coach Gary Bailey played all 12 Tigers that dressed a minimum of seven and a half minutes, with eleven of them playing double digit minutes. “It was a solid win for us,” said Bailey. “We have a long road trip tomorrow to play NCAA D1 Western Illinois University so it was important that our bench be able to give us some good minutes tonight, and they did.”
The Archers were not giving up easily as they stubbornly led the Tigers early in the game 14-11, but Grace took the lead 16-14 and never looked back, building a 35-22 lead at halftime. The Tigers emptied their bench in the last five minutes of the first half and did the same in the second half. Five Tigers hit double digits in scoring, led by sophomore Ridge Teft who hit four 3 pointers and a layup in 11 minutes of play for 14 points. Freshman Jared Bradford had 12 points and senior Nick Mascorro, junior Nick Van Loo, and junior Jake Blauwkamp each tallied 10 points. Van Loo led the Tigers with five assists and Blauwkamp led all players with eight rebounds, including seven on the offensive glass. The Tigers had a huge edge on the boards with 42 rebounds (20 on the offensive end) to the Archers 21.
The win moves the Tigers to 3-0 in Midwest Region seeding games. After returning from Illinois on Sunday, Grace will take a week off for final exams, and then they face a tough schedule the week before Christmas with away games vs. Davenport University on the 16th, Aquinas College on the 18th, and Grand Valley State University on the 21st.
