  • Defense Propels Lady Tigers to Victory at Andrews

The Grace Bible College women's basketball team recently clinched the #1 seed for the NCCAA Midwest Regional, but all of the coaches and players would tell you they haven't been playing their best defense in recent games.  The team came out at Andrews University on Thursday night looking to change that trend.  The Lady Tigers played aggressively at the start and held the hosts scoreless for the first five minutes of the game and to only 12 points for the half as they jumped out to a 40-12 halftime lead.  The Tigers forced 14 first half turnovers and committed only three of their own for the half.

"That was exactly the kind of basketball we were looking for", Coach Renzema said about the first half.  "We came out aggressively and were a lot better with our intensity and our help defense.  For some reason, those areas have been lacking in recent games and it was nice to see out there tonight."

The second half became a bit of a grind offensively for the Tigers as they played a lot of different player combinations, but the defense held strong and they finished with a solid 59-29 victory.  Molly Holtrop (Cedar Springs H.S.) led the Tiger offense with 14 points and four assists.  Megan Scholtens (Quad City Home School) also reached double figures with 10.  Amy Leszinske (Ravenna H.S.) led the rebounders with seven.  A total of 11 Tigers reached the scoring column and all 13 players got at least eight minutes of action.

"We got our 19th win tonight and we would sure like to get to 20 and have a shot to play for a berth in the national tournament," Coach Renzema talked about the upcoming regional.  "It is nice to be the #1 seed, but there are no easy games in our region this year and there are several teams capable of winning the tournament.  I know we will have to play excellent defense to have a shot, but if we do play our style of defense well, I like our chances."

The Lady Tigers will next be in action at the regional tournament at Northland International University and will play at 8 PM Central Time on Friday, February 28.  Stay tuned for potential live streaming information.
